I sat in FF Bruce’s living room in 1982 and asked him about 1 Tim 2, and his response was that Paul would roll over in his grave if he heard how we are using his statements as fixed rules. Well done, Beth, to point to FF Bruce.

I should have written “role” over in his grave!

I read Bruce’s essay about 20 years ago at a New College Berkeley workshop and when I read his exegesis of the Adam and Eve story I burst into tears. All my life I had lived and been taught that women were secondary in every way possible. I love Bruce, and his view of Paul as the apostle of the heart set free has been a guiding light for me in my life and studies.

I'm also on my way to digesting Scot Mcknight's book, who I see is communicating with you. Hi, Scot! Coming soon!

Hi, Beth. I'm just now preparing a post on Beth Allison Barr's book The Making of Biblical Womanhood. Some of her arguments have shown up in other books I've digested, so I'm highlighting her dissection of medieval practices which are, after all, her speciality. I appreciate being able to read the results of this Bruce/Danvers debate, tho. Do you think complementarianism has become stronger or weaker since 1988?

I think complementarianism has been amping itself up over the last couple decades
