Perpetua and Felicity, a digital collage by Beth Felker Jones
This digital collage remembers the early Christian martyrs Perpetua and Felicity. It’s one of my favorite pieces. Here, we see the bars of their imprisonment, but those bars are behind them now, as they are freed, like the entwined doves in the piece. Both women appear with cracks in their skin healed in gold, referencing the art of kintsugi and the resurrection. Their gospel friendship crossed the line between enslaved and nobility. While imprisoned, Perpetua was nursing an infant child; in this icon, blood and breast milk symbolize new birth in Jesus. Some elements of the collage were generated using AI.
In honor of their feast day, March 7th, I’m making this high resolution image available for download without a watermark. You can also purchase print products of the image at my Redbubble store.
Grace & peace,
