We’re back from a long planned for vacation to Italy and France, and I have a million thoughts and images swimming through my mind from my trip.

Our older son was studying in Italy this summer, and we took the teenagers across the Atlantic to “pick him up” and enjoy some famous things, first in Rome and then, because it’s my daughter’s dream city, in Paris.
The monks at San Gregorio have a guest house a few minutes walk from the Colosseum. Once we figured out how to get inside—after hauling suitcases up all those medieval stairs—it was a beautiful and bizarre place to stay. Priceless stuccoes right next to our very simple rooms.
I felt that layered-ness throughout our trip.
Too many layers to process, really, staying at a medieval monastery, built over a 6th century monastery, itself built over ancient ruins. Our lives are layered, as is our faith. Our loves.
